Spring Field Trip 2013: Devon

The spring field trip for 2013 was organised by Frances Griffith, Henrietta Quinnell and Eileen Wilkes.  Members enjoyed visits to many hillfort sites of all sizes in eastern and south Devon and Dartmoor.  Thanks go to the organisers for a superb weekend, to Devon County Council for a grant towards printing and transport costs, to Andy Crabb and Dartmoor National Park for hosting the evening reception, and to Devon Archaeological Society for making publications and information material available.  Thanks also to all the landowners of the monuments for permitting access to their sites.

Spring Field Trip 2012: The Clwydian Range 20-23 April 2012

A very successful spring field trip was enjoyed by a large group of members visiting the hillforts of the Clwyds led by Fiona Gale, Graeme Guilbert and Ian Brown. We were fortunate to have several members with us, who are currently involved with fieldwork and research on these hillforts. The weather, in spite of the forecast, kept most of the worst showers for journeys between hillforts. We enjoyed spectacular views of this beautiful region from many of the hillforts, including Moel Fenlli, Penycloddiau, Moel Arthur and Moel Hirradug to name a few. On the Saturday evening we were treated to a reception and entertainment hosted by Denbighshire County Council at the historic Nantclwyd House at Ruthin. Here we were treated to a talk and demonstration by trombonist John Kenny to a variety of instruments from a conch shell to an Alphorn with the highlight being the the demonstration of the recently reconstructed carnyx, based on Iron Age remains of the Deskford Carnyx found in Scotland in 1816. Thanks are due to the organisers and leaders for the success of this weekend and thanks are due to Denbighshire County Council for the provision of mini-buses and the Saturday evening reception.

Spring Field Trip 2011: Pembrokeshire 8-10 April 2011
